From Doubt to Deed: How One Family’s Determination Unlocked a New Path to Homeownership

A Family Worth Fighting For

When Michael and Elizabeth started with The HomeOwnership Center (HOC) a year ago, they had some work to do before being ready to purchase a house. Michael was committed to making it happen. He secured a new job, doubling his income, and methodically paid off every collection and charge-off. With three young children, the motivation was simple: his family

“Finding a home to raise my kids and watch them grow,” Michael said when asked what kept him going through the process. “It means a lot to finally be able to purchase a home for my family.”

First Thought the Door

When it came time to close, Michael and Elizabeth were the first borrowers to close through HOC’s newly certified FHA Closing Cost Assistance loan program. Securing this certification took dedication, with HOC’s Loan Originator spending over six months completing a rigorous application process to become an approved FHA Closing Cost Assistance lender. The effort was worth it! This program allows borrowers to finance their closing costs when they have already dipped into their savings to cover their down payment, ensuring that they are not starting homeownership with an empty bank account, rather than draining their savings, giving families a realistic path to the closing table, even when they are without robust savings. This program minds the gap between borrowers not having enough.

For HOC, the certification opens a new door for helping families achieve homeownership. The program expands HOC’s brokered lending partners, meaning more families in the region can benefit in a moment when affordability barriers are high.

Keep Trying

As for Michael, his first order of business after getting the keys? “Mowing the grass.”

For anyone who is in the same position as Michael and Elizabeth were a year ago, uncertain and wondering if homeownership is possible, Michael says, “Keep trying and working with Jami and Chris, and you’ll get there.”
